  • 2024-07-08In constructionAESC's own first-stone release: 'Today, Monday, July 8, marked the groundbreaking ceremony of AESC's future gigafactory for batteries in Navalmoral de la Mata, Cáceres.' La Moncloa and the Junta de Extremadura record the same ceremony, with the Prime Minister and the President of the Junta present. TWO TIMETABLES THAT DO NOT AGREE, AND BOTH ARE HELD. The 2024 release says the plant 'is scheduled to begin production in 2026'; the Junta told the Extremadura Assembly in June 2026 that construction concludes in November 2027 and the first cells come in December 2028, and an opposition deputy in the same session said that two years after the first stone there is 'la primera piedra y nada más'. The status is what none of them disputes — ground was broken and no cell has been made — and the four-and-a-half-year gap between the ceremony and the first cell is the fact a reader should have, not a discrepancy to be resolved by taking the newest number silently.source

Technology and measures

  • Gigafactory-scale cell manufacturingcommercialElectrode coating, cell assembly and formation run at gigawatt-hour scale on one site. It is the process node rather than a chemistry: the same lines make several chemistries, and what decides whether Europe has cells is whether the lines exist and yield, not which cathode runs through them.
  • Lithium iron phosphate cellscommercialA cathode of iron and phosphate rather than nickel, manganese and cobalt. Lower energy density and lower cost, and it removes the two metals whose supply is most concentrated outside Europe, which is why it is the chemistry the volume end of the market has moved to.

Funding
