Announced

LEILAC 2 is Heidelberg Materials' cement project at Ennigerloh, Germany.

Why it matters

Nothing has been committed to it yet.

  • LEILAC 2 was announced on 1 February 2021. as of 2021-02-01
  • Its site is at Ennigerloh, Germany. as of 2024-03-06
  • It uses direct separation carbon capture. as of 2024-03-06
  • No committed public money is on file for it. as of 2024-03-06

Where LEILAC 2 is

LEILAC 2 is at Ennigerloh, Germany, and this register holds no position for it. The company has confirmed the site and no citable source places the works: it is being built where nobody has yet drawn it. The row is held anyway — position is not a condition of being on file — and what was searched, and what was found instead, is below.

THE WORKS IS ENNIGERLOH, ON THE OWNER'S OWN CURRENT STATEMENT of 6 March 2024, and the row's id still reads `leilac2-hannover` because an id is a handle and not a claim: renaming it would break every file that points at it and would say nothing the relocation event does not already say. NO POSITION SOUGHT BY THIS PASS, as before: brief 8 forbids geocoding in a census, and the owner statement names the works and not a position. A polygon for Ennigerloh is a separate job and the row stands without one, on the rule that position is not an admission leg.

  • 2021-02-01AnnouncedHeidelbergCement, own release of 1 February 2021: “it has been decided to build the LEILAC 2 demonstration installation for carbon capture at the HeidelbergCement cement plant in Hanover, Germany... an installation around four times as large will be operated in Hanover, which will capture 20% of the cement plant's capacity, corresponding to around 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year”source
  • 2024-03-06AnnouncedTHE PROJECT MOVED AND THE STATUS DID NOT. Heidelberg Materials' own release: the LEILAC-2 project 'is now planned to be carried out at Heidelberg Materials' Ennigerloh cement plant', having 'previously been supposed to be realised at the Heidelberg Materials site in Hanover, Germany. Now that clinker production will end there in the second half of 2024, another location had to be found.' A works that stops making clinker cannot host a calciner retrofit. The project is still announced and still 100,000 t CO2/yr; what changed is the host works, and that is what this event records. Found by the brief 9b supplier sweep, which read the technology partner's relocation announcements of 29 January and 4 March 2024 and then the owner's own of 6 March.source

Technology and measures

  • Direct separation carbon capturedemonstrationThe raw meal is calcined inside steel tubes heated from outside, so the process CO2 leaves in its own stream rather than mixed into the flue gas, and needs no solvent, no sorbent and no oxygen plant to separate it. Calix's Leilac-2 design puts four calciner tubes in one furnace chamber with a preheater string taking heat off the flue gas, and targets CO2 of better than 95 per cent purity.

Funding

No public capital recorded for this project.
