T1 Energy Giga Arctic
T1 Energy · Mo i Rana · NO · Batteries and solar · supply security
T1 Energy Giga Arctic is T1 Energy's batteries and solar project at Mo i Rana, Norway.
Why it matters
It will not be built.
- T1 Energy Giga Arctic was cancelled on 31 March 2026. as of 2026-03-31
- It was to be at Mo i Rana, Norway. as of 2026-09-06
- It uses gigafactory-scale cell manufacturing. as of 2026-09-06
- No committed public money is on file for it. as of 2026-09-06
Where T1 Energy Giga Arctic is
T1 Energy Giga Arctic is cancelled, and this register holds no position for it. It was to be at Mo i Rana, Norway; the works was never placed to the precision a mark on a picture would claim, and looking for one was not thought worth doing on a project that stopped.
LOCATION NOT SOUGHT: PROJECT CANCELLED. The perimeter asks for a site the company has confirmed and a citable source can place, and the second half is research that only pays for itself on a works somebody might visit. The company that was building it is now a solar manufacturer with a different name, and its European battery assets are held for sale; part of the Giga Arctic site is being rezoned for a data centre. What would be bought by finding the parcel is a dot a reader would take for a building. The absence is recorded as a decision rather than left as a gap: this register looks for a position on projects that are being built, and says so where it has not looked.

- 2024-02-29In constructionFREYR's own FY2023 10-K: 'In June 2022 … FREYR formally sanctioned the construction of Giga Arctic, a 120,000 square meter gigafactory in Mo i Rana, Norway. In 2023, we substantially completed groundworks and certain foundation structures, erected the initial building and secured and weatherized it, and then suspended work on the planned gigafactory.' Construction started and stopped inside one filing.source
- 2026-03-31CancelledTHE COMPANY'S OWN FILING, and the rename is in the register: EDGAR carries the filer as T1 Energy Inc. with the former name FREYR Battery, Inc. The FY2025 10-K reports that 'the assets of our European businesses and our business in Coweta County, Georgia met the criteria for classification as held for sale as of December 31, 2024' and that 'the ultimate disposal represents a strategic shift that has had a major effect on our operations', so the European battery businesses are presented as discontinued operations. Mo i Rana appears in Properties as a lease of the CQP and of the LAND for Giga Arctic — the plan is a landholding, not a works. The date is the filing's; the decision is the pivot to US solar that preceded it. In late August 2026 Rana municipality approved rezoning part of the site for a data centre, reported and not filed, which is why it is a note and not a status.source
- by 2026-09-09CancelledAWARD TERMINATED. The Innovation Fund's own project factsheet for grant 101133106 — 'Giga Arctic: Building a European future for clean batteries' — carries the word TERMINATED twice over an award of 'EUR 100,000,000' to the Mo i Rana gigafactory, and states 'FINANCIAL CLOSE DATE 30 April, 2025' and 'ENTRY INTO OPERATION DATE 31 October, 2028'. The coordinator is FREYR BATTERY GIGA ARCTIC AS; this row carries T1 Energy, which is what Freyr became, and the match is on the site the funder names. The funder is the speaker and this is money leaving the project, which is what event_kind `financing` is for. THE DATE IS AN UPPER BOUND: the fiche says 'Updated on 09 September 2026' and gives no date for the termination itself. THE STATUS DOES NOT MOVE — a funder withdrawing its money is a fact about the award, and reading a cancellation out of it would be this register deciding something the owner has not said. An owner look is queued. D-B19, applied.source
Technology and measures
- Gigafactory-scale cell manufacturingcommercialElectrode coating, cell assembly and formation run at gigawatt-hour scale on one site. It is the process node rather than a chemistry: the same lines make several chemistries, and what decides whether Europe has cells is whether the lines exist and yield, not which cathode runs through them.
Funding
No public capital recorded for this project.
